Another of my 2013 Michael Baisden DJ Contest Entries
March 29, 2013 12:02 PM PDT
In 2012, some friends of mine on Facebook and Twitter made me aware of an “Old School DJ contest” being held by syndicated radio host Michael Baisden. The finalists were going to be flown to Dallas to compete live for a winner-take-all contest for a cash prize and to be the DJ for his birthday party. I wound up missing the entry deadline but listened to some of the mix entries as he played them live on his show. I’m not big on downing other DJs but going strictly based on what I heard, I kicked myself for not being more timely in my submissions. The rules, as simple as they sound, provided a bit of a creative challenge. There were to be 3 separate 10-minute mixes of old-school: house, R&B, hip-hop, etc. I really do have a “lotta damn records” so the challenge for me was to be able to select and weave a handful of REALLY GOOD songs within a 10 minute span (10 minutes goes by QUICKLY!) showcasing my DJ skills/personality with minimal-to-no scratching, absolutely no DJ drops and absolutely no talking on the microphone. Basically, they wanted to hear that you can actually DJ without the benefit of technology. I’ve been DJing for over 2 decades – before the technology so it made it a fun project for me and evened out the score if this was to be judged fairly. Now in 2013, I’m being made aware again that Baisden is having this contest – and I’m being told that I more or less “better” enter this year because they know I can win this. Adding that battery to my back and coming off missing out last year, I try to knock it out the park. I did my 3 mixes all in one night. No more than 2 takes on any one of them. I’m feeling VERY confident that I will get a callback. Except…..Baisden’s show gets canceled the other week!! *cue up The Price Is Right Loser music* Ah well, so much for that! But as a measure of thanks, I wanted to share the SECOND mix I completed with those of you who have and continue to support me. I don’t DJ for a living or for fame, I do it purely for the art and the love and the history. Without y’all, I wouldn’t continue this…. it's that era of growth, artistry, purity and for the love of the culture and the music: 1986-1994 (with more emphasis on the 1986-1990 era). Much love to my Bronx 228th Street family, the Class of 1991 Walton High School and Olinville Class of 1988 on this one!! recorded live on 107.3 WKCR Online Radio, Tuesday February 21, 2012 track listing: Biz Markie - A One Two

I declare that for 2012, REAL DJing is making a comeback!! No more words, no long description, if you love real music of the 70s then you'll love this podcast.
Apologize for the abrupt ending, the radio station server got unexpectedly booted during my last 10 minutes. Smoothed Out to go Steppin'

probably my best R&B mix...from those smoothed out grown cuts to the party warm-up cuts!! featuring Mary J. Blige, Changing Faces, the very underrated Faith Evans, Brandy, Horace Brown, Groove Theory, R. Kelly, Aaliyah, and others. Perfect for the ride of for work...well it's slightly NSFW (not safe for work...language on a couple of songs) Illmatic to ELmatic

A lot of y’all know me as a hip-hop historian, activist, purist and unapologetic NYer but I’m breaking my normal mold with this mini podcast highlighting a project coming out of Detroit that I THOROUGHLY respect. It’s Elzhi … and his remake/interpretation of Nas’ timeless and classic first LP, Illmatic (1994). This one is called ELmatic..therefore I present: From Illmatic to Elmatic. Paradise Garage Classics

We're always paying tribute to someone after they've already gone. I paid tribute to Kool Herc while he's still here (although in bad health). Not by playing just old-school hip-hop but to play all the elements Herc brought to us that birthed the hip-hop culture - break beats, R&B, disco, funk, etc. And of course, a STRONG(!!) James Brown session for the last hour. broadcast live on http://1073wkcr.com Tuesday February 1, 2011 Old 2 Da New Session

I took way too long to get back on my DJ grind but I made it worth your while. Unapologetically very NY-centric. MCing. Lyrics. Street-level boom-bap. 3 of the best who ever did it came from NYC - Brooklyn & Queens stand up!
Run Time: 1 hour 18 minutes The Best of Gangstarr (R.I.P. Guru)

Podcast SummaryA cornucopia of “just good music.” From Hip-Hop to Classic Soul to Reggae to House. From breakbeats to Disco to New Jack Swing to slow jams. JUST GOOD MUSIC! About DaManDLI am a DJ..not a record-player or a jukebox and I mean that in every sense of the acronym. I come from the era where every knew and respected the fact that BEFORE THE MC, THERE WAS THE DJ. Without the music, there is no party. Without the right DJ, your party would more than likely be a failure. I come from the era of block parties, skating rinks and park jams. I come from the BRONX...the birthplace of hip-hop. What you can expect from being a fan of my podcast site is the truest essence of what separates a DJ from someone who just spins records, and I first sat in front of a turntable at age 3....no lie...and I have the picture to prove it. KEEP THE CROWD HAPPY AND MOVING. Whether it be some of the original breakbeats from the era of Herc, Bambaataa and Flash.... ....or the disco and R&B wizardry of Pete DJ Jones and Grandmaster Flowers..... ......or the rocksteady beats from sound systems and dancehalls in Jamaica (where hip-hop owes its roots to) such as Jammy or Coxsone, Duke Reid or Skateland.... .....or the days of Awesome Two, Red Alert, Mr. Magic & Marley Marl or P-Fine when hip-hop never got prime-time on the radio.... ....or the mixtape mastery of the great Kid Capri rocking the classics and the theme-based tapes... you're going to get the essence right here. DaManDL & DJ PARALLEL - Around The Way Productions, 1991 to infinity
